Adding Central Air to a Historic New Orleans Home

You can cool a historic, no-duct New Orleans home without gutting it — ductless mini-splits deliver efficient cooling and heating through small wall or ceiling units and a slim line set, no full ductwork required. For shotguns, doubles, and raised cottages, it is usually the least invasive, best-fitting solution.

What is ductless central comfort?

A ductless mini-split is a split system with an outdoor condenser and one or more indoor heads, linked by a slim refrigerant line instead of ducts. Its inverter compressor ramps up and down for steady comfort and excellent humidity control — ideal for older homes with plaster walls and no duct chases.

When does ductless beat forced-air ducts?

  • The home has no ductwork and nowhere to route it.
  • You want to preserve plaster, trim, and historic character.
  • You need room-by-room control (rentals, doubles, additions).

Failure modes when retrofitting old homes

  • Wrong-sized heads: each zone needs its own load calculation.
  • Poor head placement: the wrong location leaves dead spots or short-cycles.
  • Ignoring the building envelope: uninsulated walls and leaky single-pane windows undercut any system.

Proof

We have retrofitted countless Uptown, Marigny, and West Bank historic homes with ductless systems. Done right, they disappear into the room, cut bills versus window units, and finally make second floors and back additions livable in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add central air without ducts?
Yes. Ductless mini-splits provide central-style comfort without ductwork, which is why they are the go-to for historic New Orleans homes that were never built for forced air.
Are mini-splits efficient in our climate?
Very. Inverter-driven mini-splits modulate output, so they run efficiently and dehumidify well through long, low-speed cycles — a strong match for humid Louisiana.
Will a mini-split heat my home in winter?
Yes. Mini-splits are heat pumps and handle our mild winters comfortably, often eliminating the need for a separate furnace.
