AC vs. Heat Pump: Which Is Right for Your Home?

An air conditioner only cools; a heat pump cools the same way and also heats by running in reverse. For most mild-winter New Orleans homes — especially all-electric ones — a heat pump replaces both the AC and the furnace with one efficient system. If you have natural-gas heat you are happy with, a straight AC can still be the right call.

What is the actual difference?

The cooling hardware is essentially identical. A heat pump adds a reversing valve so it can also pull heat from outdoor air to warm your home. An AC cannot heat, so it is paired with a separate furnace.

When to choose each

  • Heat pump: all-electric homes, no gas line, or you want one system for both seasons.
  • AC + furnace: you already have efficient natural-gas heat you want to keep.

Failure modes

Either choice fails when it is sized by guesswork instead of a load calculation, or when a heat pump is installed without a backup-heat plan. Efficiency ratings (SEER2, HSPF2) only pay off on a correct install.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a heat pump better than an AC in Louisiana?
For many homes here, yes — it cools like an AC and heats efficiently through our mild winters, replacing two systems with one. If you have cheap, reliable gas heat, an AC-plus-furnace setup can still win.
Does a heat pump cost more than an AC?
A heat pump can cost a bit more up front than an AC alone, but it also replaces the furnace, so compare it to the cost of both. We size and price it for your specific home.
