Air Purifier vs. UV Light: What Cleans Your Air?

A whole-home air purifier captures particles like dust, pollen, and smoke; a UV light targets mold and biological growth on the cold, damp evaporator coil. They solve different problems, so the right answer is usually the one that matches your concern — or, in many humid homes, both.

Two different jobs

An air cleaner or HEPA-grade filter removes airborne particles (rated by CADR). A UV light sterilizes the coil surface to stop mold and odor — it does not filter particles out of the air.

When to choose which

  • Air purifier: allergies, dust, pet dander, smoke — particle problems.
  • UV light: musty smell or visible mold on a coil that stays damp in our humidity.

Failure modes

A loose filter that lets air bypass it does little, and an overly dense filter media can choke airflow. UV is not a cure-all — it will not clean particles or fix humidity. Match the tool to the actual problem.

Proof and your next step

We help homeowners pick filtration, UV, or both based on what is actually wrong with the air. Ask about indoor air quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a UV light replace an air filter?
No. A UV light sterilizes the coil to control mold and odor; it does not capture dust, pollen, or smoke. You still need a quality filter for particles.
Do I need both an air purifier and a UV light?
Many humid New Orleans homes benefit from both — filtration for particles and UV for coil mold — but it depends on your specific air-quality concern. We will not upsell what you do not need.
